United States imposes sanctions against Iran central bank governor

16 May 2018

The U.S. sanctions got here as Iranian International Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was assembly in Brussels with the highest French, British and German diplomats because the Europeans search to maintain Iran from bailing on the nuclear deal.

The move against Seif came one week after President Donald Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear accord and signaled plans to ratchet up pressure on the Iranian economy, and especially on the economic power of the Revolutionary Guards.

"The United States will not permit Iran's increasingly brazen abuse of the worldwide financial system", Mnuchin added. "The global community must remain vigilant against Iran's deceptive efforts to provide financial support to its terrorist proxies", Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin asserted. He argued it failed to address Iran's activities beyond its nuclear pursuits, such as its support for groups like Hezbollah, which is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S.

Sometimes, when the USA punishes people with sanctions, it prohibits Individuals or US firms from doing enterprise with them.

A European official said that some senior figures in the U.S. administration were pushing for a "North Korea scenario" in Iran, in reference to the drastic sanctions imposed on the North Korean regime which Washington believes helped push the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, into halting missile and nuclear testing and agreeing to renewed negotiations. That means that anyone, in any country, who does business with Seif or Tarzali could themselves be punished with sanctions, cutting them off from the USA financial system.

There was no quick remark Tuesday evening from Iranian officers. Iranian media initially reported the decision based on reports in the foreign media. The sanctions concentrating on Iran's central financial institution executives are among the first actions by Trump's administration since pulling out of the deal to begin ramping up that financial strain.

And on November 5, additional sanctions will be reimposed on persons "knowingly engaging in certain significant transactions" with the central bank.

Seif is also under attack inside Iran.

Valiollah Seif, the head of Iran's Central Bank, allegedly sent money to the IRGC-QF via the Iraq-based al-Bilad Islamic Bank to support Hezbollah's "violent and radical agenda".

The Treasury Department said it had imposed sanctions on Valiollah Seif, the bank's current governor, and another senior official, Ali Tarzali, the assistant director of the bank's worldwide department, labeling them both as "specially designated global terrorists".
