Dakota Pitts headed back to school Monday for the first time since the death of his father, Officer Rob Pitts - who was killed in the line of duty.

IN youngster Dakota Pitts was welcomed to school with a tribute from some of his father's colleagues.

The community has shown his family an outpouring of support, and it continued on Monday when Pitts' 5-year-old son Dakota returned to school, WTHI reports. He and other officers approached Christopher Wolfe, 21, who died of a gunshot wound after barricading himself inside an apartment.

Dakota hadn't been back to his IN elementary school until yesterday and he asked for one of his dad's co-workers to take him. The SWAT team even presented Dakota with his own shirt and badge.

His dad, Rob Pitts, was a 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department and was killed in a shootout between police and a suspect on May 4, according to the department.
