U.S. President Donald Trump's public support for the two Koreas' discussion on the possibility of declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War is expected to accelerate the momentum for efforts to establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, experts said Wednesday.
Pompeo's meeting with Kim marks the highest-level encounter between sitting U.S. and North Korean officials since former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright met with Kim Jong-un's father, Kim Jong-il, in October 2000.
Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders added: "The president said the administration has had talks at the highest levels and added that they were not with him directly". Of Pompeo's visit, a spokesman for the South Korean President's office said it was "inappropriate" for the government to comment. The AP cited two USA officials saying Pompeo traveled to North Korea for the meetings.
The revelation follows on the heels of Trump's comment hinting at possible talks of a peace treaty between the two Koreas. The meeting is the most reliable signal that momentum toward a historic summit between the USA president and the North Korean leader is real.
"What I can stress is that China and North Korea have a tradition of high level mutual visits", she told reporters.
Do said Kim had joked during a group photograph with the visiting South Korean delegation, who were concerned that they could not stand or sit down in front of the North Korean leader.

It didn't get any better from the pen though, as Bard allowed a five runs on a trio of dingers in the subsequent frame. One inning after Ohtani left, the Angels announced the right-hander had developed a blister during the second inning.
The North expressed a willingness to discuss denuclearization earlier this year after saying that it had completed its nuclear armament.
Trump seemed to communicate that negotiations between the US and North Korea were advancing, and said Japan was an important partner in the process.
Trump also backed efforts between South Korea and the North aimed at ending a state of war that has existed between the two countries since 1953.
The New York Times also reported Pompeo's secret trip to North Korea over the Easter holiday, which fell this year at the end of March and beginning of April.
"North Korea's coming along".
Moon suggested that the North Korean leader realised he had to pay more attention to pursuing pressing economic reforms to improve the livelihood of his people in the diplomatically isolated state. "It's going on right now", he said.
On Tuesday, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said she had she couldn't support Pompeo's nomination. "So, subject to a deal, they would certainly have my blessing". Some worry that potential discussions to formally end the war may distract from already hard efforts to rid the North of nuclear weapons and apply robust verification of that process.
