US Preparing New Sanctions on Russian Federation over Syria, Haley Says

17 April 2018

Trump also called out Russia's promise in 2013 that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.

France and the USA say the Geneva process is the only track to pursue a political resolution.

Trump chastised Syria's two main allies, Russia and Iran, for their roles in supporting "murderous dictators", adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin had guaranteed a 2013 worldwide agreement for al-Assad to get rid of all of his chemical weapons.

The strike on President Bashar Assad's chemical weapons facilities was the price Syria paid for using chemical weapons on its citizens.

The Defense Secretary went on to call the offensive a "one off shot", saying, "right now we have no additional attacks planned".

Haley said the joint military strike "put a heavy blow into their chemical weapons program, setting them back years" and reiterated that if Assad uses poison gas again, "the United States is locked and loaded".

Russia's response Saturday underscored Putin's effort to use Syria to help portray himself as a guarantor of global stability, despite the torrent of western criticism. One of the failings of the accord between Russian Federation and the United States that was supposed to rid Syria of chemical arms in 2014 was that it was based on Syria's "declared" stockpiles, a nuance Mr. Kerry took care to note.

President Vladimir Putin said that the military action launched by the USA, in cooperation with Britain and France, was "an act of aggression" against a sovereign state and strongly condemned the act.

The British envoy to the OPCW said the body had recorded 390 allegations of the use of banned chemicals in Syria since 2014, and that a failure by the OPCW to act risked allowing "further barbaric use of chemical weapons". "However, in a sign of cynical disdain, a group of Western countries chose to take military action without waiting for the results of the investigation".

The statements were significant because the head of the Russian General Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, had previously said the Russian military would respond to USA airstrikes that put Russian lives at risk by shooting down the missiles and potentially the ships or planes that fired them.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Britain must "take every possible precaution" against any potential Russian counter-measures and acknowledged that recent relations between Moscow and London had "not been good".

"This action gives a strong signal to extremists and militants that they are doing right things", RIA quoted Maria Zakharova as saying.

"More than 70 people sheltering in basements have reportedly died, with 43 of those deaths related to symptoms consistent with exposure to highly toxic chemicals", according to an agency statement on Wednesday.

In his televised address from the White House on Friday, Trump said the USA was prepared to keep up the economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Assad until he ends a pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons. He has previously told his national security team he wants U.S. troops to exit Syria within six months.

The main question tossed around in the first few hours seemed to be "Why now?"

"They have even suggested that the United Kingdom was behind the attack". He described Russian allegations of British involvement in the alleged chemical attack in Syria and the poisoning in Salisbury as "preposterous" and "demented".

"It is our understanding the Russians may have visited the attack site", U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Ward said at a meeting of the OPCW in The Hague on Monday. The whole world is wondering now what? In fact, he accused the US of having the most. "I suspect, however they'll think long and hard about it".

We applauded him when he was elected, so now we get what we get. "Putin is now saving Assad with the money of Russian retirees". The U.S. goal was to break the Syrian alliance with Iran and Russia, Glass said.

"This is not about Syria, it's about politics".

Russian Federation has denied poisoning the father and daughter and is seeking access to speak to them. We have to find a common language. "The US will be a partner and a friend".

The U.S., Britain and France say they launched airstrikes against Syrian chemical sites after obtaining "proof" that poisonous gas was used last weekend in Douma.

Mekdad declined to comment to reporters waiting outside the hotel where the meeting took place.

"This is a very serious attack from the perspective of bringing a political resolution". Russian Federation is, of course, an ally of Syria.

Stankevich went on to make an unorthodox suggestion that was quickly snuffed out with laughter and change of subject by the hosts and other panel members - that Russian Federation pull out of Syria.

"That's what we've always done and will continue to do", May said.
