Commonwealth Games: Gold Coast bids adieu with colourful ceremony

17 April 2018

Nigeria's flagbearer Blessing Okagbare leads the delegation during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games at the Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast on April 4, 2018.

The part of the closing ceremony that organisers made a decision to broadcast included performances from local musicians including Amy Shark, Guy Sebastian, Yothu Yindi, Kate Cebrano and Dami Im.

"They're actually wrecking a tradition that is so important and part of the Commonwealth Games".

"We wanted athletes to be part of and enjoy the closing ceremony".

"We understand many people have been disappointed by tonight's closing ceremony and to be perfectly honest Jo, so have we been", Zempilas said.

The host broadcaster of the Commonwealth Games, NEP Group, also released a social media post saying it was "disappointed".

"With over half the athletes scheduled to depart the Gold Coast tomorrow, it is understandable that large numbers of athletes chose to depart the ceremony early, to prepare for their journey or attend their own team celebrations", it said. However, having them come in to the stadium in the pre-show meant the TV audience were not able to see the athletes enter the stadium.

Griggs also took aim at claims the network would have been given a broadcast briefing well in advance and should have known what to expect. "You want to see the athletes come in", she said.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had disqualified him in July a year ago , forcing the three-time prime minister to resign. Multiple petitions have been filed in different courts against them over alleged contempt of court.

"In the end, we can go through the entrails of all this, but I'm chairman and the buck stops with me". Of course. We got it wrong.

"People are thinking that Channel 7 has chosen not to show pictures of athletes or not to show the flag bearer, Kurt Fearnley, or other flag bearers", said Griggs. "I apologise to you and anyone else", he added.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, who actually spoke at the closing ceremony, also criticized the organizers on Monday.

Beattie accepted blame this morning admitting they "got it wrong" and the decision to not broadcast the athletes entering the stadium - including flag bearer Fearnley - was for their "welfare".

Zempilas explained it was the decision of the host broadcaster to have the athletes in the stadium before the ceremony begun.

However, Mr Beattie told Sunrise that the reason for leaving the athletes out was based on the competitors' welfare.

Singer Guy Sebastian performs during the closing ceremony. "I accept full responsibility for it", he said.

"But we made a mistake".
