Commonwealth Games 2018: Chairman Peter Beattie admits 'We got it wrong'

Johanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas were left underwhelmed by the Closing Ceremony.

It was the ideal tonic the boxer needed to do the one thing she hasn't done yet - win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Channel 7 - who have had their fair share of critics with the Commonwealth Games coverage due to some big blunders - were accused of not showing athletes entering the stadium during the broadcast, but according to the Basil Zempilas and Johanna Griggs on the Channel 7 commentary team, the host broadcaster, NEP Australia, and organising committee made a decision to place the athletes inside the stadium before the Closing Ceremony kicked off. "They made the decision not to have the athletes enter the stadium. We should assess our success by participation and the way we conducted ourselves during the Games. It is also time to begin to invest in our athletes if we want to do well in sports", he remarked.

Singer Guy Sebastian performs during the closing ceremony. With the proud support of close to 15,000 passionate and friendly volunteers, a spectacle of 18 sports and 7 para-sports contested and broadcast to a cumulative global audience of 1.5 billion. Seven told AdNews that its ratings were relatively consistent throughout the event. To be perfectly honest Jo, so have we.

Said a satisfied Riddin: "This medal from one of our Seals swimmers was the first medal I managed to witness live in my 40 years of coaching at this level of competition".

The broadcast of the ceremony was pretty conspicuously missing the usual footage of athletes and flagbearers entering the stadium, which meant we didn't get to see wheelchair racing gold medallist Kurt Fearnley carry the Australian flag for the last time before retiring.

"We can only show the pictures that are provided by the actual host broadcasters", Griggs told Seven on Sunday.

Those Pacers , though, didn't have Oladipo or the balance of this Indy squad, which may lack experience but not confidence. IN took control from the outset, opening a 21-point lead in the first quarter and pushing it to 23 in the third.

"There's no athletes in here".

Some Commonwealth Games athletes preferred to drink at a bar outside the stadium, than stay until the end of last night's closing ceremony.

Zempilas also took aim at some of the speeches during proceedings.

"This decision to bring the athletes into the stadium before the broadcast was operationally driven, given there were restrictions on being able to keep the athletes waiting in comfort". Of course. We got it wrong.

"There were too many speeches, I shouldn't have spoken because it bored the athletes silly", added Beattie. "I congratulate all those athletes who are bringing back medals", Modi said in a statement.

Beattie was then quick to apologise for his remarks. It said it needed to get the athletes on the ground earlier to accommodate the athletes leaving the event early.

"We wanted to stand there and celebrate our athletes and it didn't happen".
