Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium arrives to take on Samsung Galaxy S9

16 April 2018

If you are a Sony Mobile fan, you'll know that Sony likes to release Xperia handsets.

TechRadar spoke to Sony, who confirmed that the phone may not be available in the UAE, Saudi and the rest of the Middle East - although it's yet to rule out its arrival completely. Tell us down in the comments.

We expect to hear more about the Xperia XZ2 Premium as it gets closer to its summer ship date.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium also has super slow-motion that captures video at a rate of 960fps. It's larger in all dimensions. Now it's Sony's turn to boldly claim that its phone camera is the most advanced there is. The fingerprint scanner is on the rear of both phones, quite a long way down the back of the phone. Xperia XZ2 Premium is IP65/IP68 [iv] certified to withstand splashes and spills. However, it offers 16:9 aspect ratio instead of the new 18:9. The highlight of the Xperia XZ2 Premium is its 4K HDR display, which is the highest resolution screen ever put on a smartphone. Yes, that's incredibly sharp, but Sony's argument will be that the phone captures and plays back native 4K content. However, the Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact seem to the bearers of the flagship status for the Middle East and North Africa.

Pricing also hasn't been revealed but, assuming it ships to the U.S., we'd expect it to be a fair whack more expensive - think up to $1000 and at least $900, compared to the XZ2's $800 unlocked asking price in the States. That means the Xperia XZ2 has smaller bezels than the XZ2 Premium. It sports a 5.8-inch 4K (2160x3840 pixels) HDR Triluminos display with the X-Reality for mobile engine. The only difference is that there is now a dual camera setup on the back, something we missed on Xperia XZ2.

The phone is powered by Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 630 GPU. The handset will receive its juice from a Type-C USB 3.1 Gen. 1 standard port, meaning that data transfers are going to be relatively high at 5Gbps but not as high as Gen. 2 standard.

The phone might not feature a headphone jack, but it does provide support for Qi wireless charging and is fast-charge compatible too. And it's not just about increasing the screen size, or putting in a bigger battery. The dual camera, by the way, has one color lens and a monochrome lens. It has one 19-megapixel RGB or colour sensor and another 12-megapixel monochrome sensor. The front camera, however, is a 13MP shooter with F2.0 aperture. However, Sony's packing in 6GB of RAM to give the Premium model even more of a performance boost.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium then gets a second rear camera. The secondary rear camera is a 12MP B&W sensor with 1.55μm pixel size and f/1.6 G-lens. The camera's low-light capability - as well as its artistic effects - are available for viewing with the live view-finder for an accurate representation of your subject. The smartphone is capable of taking pictures in a maximum ISO of 51,200, whereas for videos it can reach a maximum ISO of 12800. To be fair, the Xperia XZ2 camera isn't the best around, so the Premium has plenty to prove.

There's been no word on what the Xperia XZ2 Premium might cost.

Price will be a big factor here.
