Manchester City rebound to beat Tottenham at Wembley

16 April 2018

The victory help Pep Guardiola extend their lead over second-placed Manchester United to 16 points.

Kyle Walker says former Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min deserves his success because he is "so nice" as the pair prepare to go head to head when Manchester City travel to Wembley.

They cant win the league today.

Much had been made of Sterling's profligacy before the game, although the winger finally netted to put City in the driving seat after 72 minutes, the England worldwide smashing home from close range after Lloris had originally saved a shot from Jesus. Incidentally, it was City who beat them last.

City regained control after half-time and should have been out of sight as Jesus scuffed badly wide and Sterling fared no better with a woeful close-range miss. I'm privileged to be part of such a great group, great players, good guys, good mentality, good atmosphere in the team, every single time I'm on the pitch I enjoy it.

Despite completely dominating the first-half, there were some nervy moments as Tottenham got back into the match until Raheem Sterling scored City's decisive third.

The Spurs are in fourth place with 67 points and remain on course for a berth in the Champions League with five games remaining in the season. Despite wins over United, Liverpool and Arsenal at Wembley, they were outplayed and outsmarted by City on the night.

Harry Kane finally came alive to play in Eriksen beyond the last man and he profited from a fortunate deflection to pull things back to 2-1.

Game 1 was scratched about three hours before the scheduled first pitch, with Game 2 called in the early afternoon. Rain-outs on March 29 and March 31 against the Pittsburgh Pirates have already been made up.

Spurs were uncharacteristically passive for much of the first half, and they struggled to disrupt City's rhythm in possession. Tottenham did a good job early on pressuring City players on both the giving and receiving end of passes and it disorganized the attack.

Their defence was unusually static for the first goal, Jesus pouncing to score after a long ball from Kompany.

Ilkay Gundogan slotted home a penalty three minutes later after Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris raced out of his goal and upended Raheem Sterling though television replays suggested his wild tackle was just outside the area.

"What they lived in the last week was so unfair but they deserve (to win the league) and now we have a match ball".

This season the 18-consecutive victories between August and December set a new Premier League record and the has spent a total of 240 days at the summit of the league since the start of the season.

Tottenham were one of the teams that troubled City last season, with their aggressive pressing and high-tempo play.

"The pundits in November, they said it was already done - it was impossible that City, if they hadn't lost in six months, it's impossible for them to drop points", he said.
