Was Rex Tillerson Really Blindsided by Trump Firing?

13 March 2018

Donald Trump announced on Twitter early Tuesday that he is removing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson from his administration, a move that follows almost a year of tension between the president and his top diplomat.

Pompeo has "tremendous energy, tremendous intellect", Trump told reporters at the White House Tuesday shortly after tweeting that he was firing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and giving the job of top diplomat to the former Republican congressman from Kansas.

Tillerson's head was on the chopping block - as is everyone's in the Trump circle - from literally the day he took the job, given the President's style and mercurial temperament. Trump tweeted at 8:44 a.m. EST.

"We've been talking about this for a long time", Trump said, citing the Iran nuclear deal as one of their points of disagreement. The two also disagreed on whether the US should remain part of the Iran deal brokered in 2015 to stop the country's development of nuclear weapons. I guess he thought it was okay. "I didn't want this job". I wanted to either break it or do something, he felt a little differently. "We weren't really thinking the same".

The top USA diplomat's team said he was feeling unwell on Saturday and later in the weekend the state department said he would cut short his tour by a day.

Sally Yates Trump fired the acting US attorney general in January after she ordered Justice Department lawyers not to enforce Trump's immigration ban. Corker, one of Tillerson's closest allies on the Hill, also gave well wishes to the outgoing secretary of state.

The move comes less than a week after the Trump administration agreed to a historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Things went steeply south when it was reported that Tillerson had called Trump a moron, a claim that the secretary of state did not directly refute.

"The secretary had every intention of staying because of critical progress made in national security", he said.

They register one win on the road, but it was against a lowly Malaga side that can't get a win to save their lives at the moment. He should be protected at the back with a similar backline of Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling playing at its heart.

Rank and file in the State Department were stunned by the announcement, three State Department officials tell Foreign Policy.

Goldstein added in his statement that Tillerson is "unaware of the reason" he's been removed but said he is "grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says he hopes CIA Director Mike Pompeo will "turn over a new leaf" as secretary of state and toughen policies toward Russian Federation and its president, Vladimir Putin.

"His experience in the military, Congress, and as leader of the Central Intelligence Agency have prepared him well for his new role and I urge his swift confirmation", said Mr. Trump in a statement.

The departure of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state is not a shocking development.

'Gina, by the way, who I know very well, who I've worked very closely with, will be the first woman director of the CIA, ' Trump said. If confirmed, she would become the CIA's first female director. Senator Ron Wyden and other Democrats opposed her nomination as deputy director past year.

Pompeo said in a statement of the president's decision, "If confirmed, I look forward to guiding the world's finest diplomatic corps in formulating and executing the President's foreign policy". "The relationship is very, very good, and that's what I need as secretary of state". I can hardly wait.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
