13 March 2018

The Naxals triggered a powerful landmine blast targetting an anti-landmine vehicle which was carrying about 11 personnel of the 212th battalion of CRPF camping at Pallodi, Special Director General (Naxal Operation) DM Awasthi said.

Those killed in the encounter were: assistant sub-inspector RKS Tomar, constable Ajay Kumar Yadav, constable Manoranjan Lanka, constable Jitendra Singh, constable Shobhit Sharma, constable Manoj Singh, constable Dharmendra Singh, constable Chandra HS and head constable Lakshman.

According to the officials, the tragic incident took place when a mine-protected vehicle was blown up by the improvised explosive devices hidden under the dirt track. Two other jawans were injured and are undergoing treatment in Raipur. This contingent was later targeted by the rebels around 12.30 pm along Kistaram-Palodi road when the personnel were conducting an area-domination operation. "I spoke to DG crpf regarding the Sukma incident and asked him to leave for Chhattisgarh".

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh has also demanded a full report on the attack.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that the incident "reflects a deteriorating internal security due to flawed policies".

The deceased jawan belonged to the 212 battalion of the CRPF, news agency ANI said.

Reacting to the development, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, "Today's IED blast in Sukma, Chhattisgarh is deeply distressing".

Twelve jawans were killed on March 11 previous year in the Bheji area of the district and their arms looted, when Maoist ambushed their patrol party.

In April 2017, 25 CRPF jawans were killed and six injured in an ambush by Maoists in the Burkapal area of Sukma in one of the biggest massacres in the recent time.
