Oakland County Health Division urges vaccinations after rise in flu cases

02 February 2018

The Louisiana Department of Health estimates between 7,000 and 8,000 people will be hospitalized this flu season.

If your doctor says you have the flu, the next thing you should do is take their prescribed medicine, drink plenty of fluids, and get plenty of rest.

The outbreak has caused a total of 84 deaths, so far, this season in the Midlands.

Cook attributes the alarm sounded by the national news to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine that stated this season's vaccine may be only 10 percent effective, a statement borne out by the sharp rise in influenza cases reported in Australia - a country which happens to use the same type of vaccine as the U.S. "Our health departments in NW Georgia will continue to administer the flu shots to anyone who needs it, to ensure that we protect our fellow citizens from diseases and harm".

"The strain of this virus does mutate", he said. That's high even for a complete total for a flu year.

The department says there were 25 flu-related deaths at the same time previous year. He said as of Tuesday, the seasonal total for influenza in the state stands at 3,872 laboratory confirmed cases - an increase from 1,411 confirmed influenza cases in Kentucky through December 30.

The Alabama Department of Public Health is now investigating 53 flu-related deaths. He said it's been at least as high a volume as in any of the past three or four years. The CDC IFI surveillance has shown that, for our region, January is typically the peak time for flu activity.

"I think it's just the nature of the influenza bug", Dr. Catapano said.

However, road safety campaigners supported the proposals, arguing speed limits were put in place for public safety. In 2016, Avon and Somerset Police caught 184,654 motorists driving above the speed limit.

H3N2 is the predominant strain for the current season, again. "If you do get the flu once you've had the vaccine, it's going to make those symptoms that you have less severe, and not last as long as it would without the vaccine,": she says. Emergency rooms are overcrowded, demanding hospitals to hire more staff and divert ambulances, according to The New York Times. Helpful CDC flu resources can be found at www.cdc.gov/flu.

Influenza or flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Health officuals are still urgently calling for the community to get their flu shots and get to a doctor for antiviral medication at the onset of symptoms.

"Hand hygiene can not be stressed enough", Ms. McArdle said.

Be sure to clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs. "And put disinfectant on highly touched areas, such as door knobs, phone receivers, remote controls and your keyboard if it's used by other people".

The vaccine doesn't provide ideal protection, so people who get it still need to wash their hands frequently or use hand sanitizer, avoid close contact with people who are sick and disinfect surfaces that people touch frequently.
