Redesigned Chevy Silverado pickup loses weight, gains size

14 January 2018

It's Chevy's closest competitor to the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 Rebel.

A new stamping technique allowed GM to carve out an additional 6.75 inches of cargo width in the bed floor of the 2019 Silverado compared with the outgoing model.

The V8 engine options will include a cylinder deactivation system that can go all the way down to just one cylinder of power under very light loads to improve fuel economy. At that reveal, Chevrolet said they gathered feedback from 7,000 people when designing the new truck, which the company says is the most research it has ever done ahead of a new model. The wheelbase is 4-inches longer, though the truck itself only grew by 1.5-inches overall. The most premium trim is the High Country. The shape of the front end has been improved to duct air around the tires, while the shape of the roof and the shape of the tailgate have been created to move air smoothly over the bed.

Under its skin, the pickup uses more high-strength steel in its ladder frame for weight savings and a 10-percent stiffer body.

As for the bed, there Chevrolet has some fighting talk for Ford.

At the preview of the Silverado on Saturday, GM's product development chief Mark Reuss took yet another shot at the competition, saying "I don't think you can get much work done with an aluminum hammer". There are now 21 tie-down points, twelve of which are fixed in the corners - each capable of handling 500 pounds, twice what the current model can deal with - and nine of which are movable.

The inner wheelhouses are made of a stronger grade of steel than the bed walls for increased impact resistance. The 2019 Silverado is the first pickup to offer a power opening and closing tailgate, controlled by the key fob or an exterior button. 120V AC outlets are optional.

The Silverado is critical to Chevrolet's business.

Clever engineering trimmed 450 pounds from the weight of a V8 crew cab 2018 Silverado. The Custom Trailboss (new for 2019) adds the Z71 Off Road Package with a locking rear differential, skid plates, Rancho shocks, 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires. On the engine side, there's a new 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel, which Chevrolet - while not revealing numbers today - claims will outperform what the recently-announced F-150 diesel can do.

Under that aluminum hood are six powertrain combinations that include revised versions of the 5.3 and 6.2-liter V8s as well as a new 3.0-liter Duramax diesel V6. It will accompany the 6.2L V-8 and utilize GM's 10-speed automatic transmission first seen in the Camaro ZL1. The Silverado also comes equipped with 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, wireless phone charging and OnStar safety and security features. There are hidden compartments behind the rear seats and storage underneath the rear seats.

With 100 years of production and the auto industry's oldest continually used nameplate, the archetypal hero vehicle for General Motors' biggest brand is a Chevrolet truck, and it's celebrating a century on the market.
