Korea talks ease war fears in Washington, but for how long?

14 January 2018

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump have waged a war of words in the past year, with the U.S. President warning he would have no choice but to "totally destroy" North Korea if America was forced to defend itself or its allies.

Talking about Pongyang's nuclear and missile programmes today, the Russian President said: "I think that Mr Kim Jong-un has obviously won this round".

"I have relationships with people", Trump continued.

Okay, having made clear how easy it is to misjudge the future, immediate or long-range, on the Korean Peninsula, I'll go out on a limb and predict the Games will go off without much of a hitch. North Korea's overtures are tactical, reckons Robert Kelly, of Pusan National University in South Korea.

It is not known how many North Koreans will wind up participating.

North Koreans now fear that high-level executives in key government agencies who engage in "non-socialist activities" will get away with their misdeeds, while powerless ordinary people who get caught will bear the brunt of harsh punishments, including death, the sources said. The joint statement issued after the talks states: "South and North Korea have decided to make joint efforts for the unity of the people and reconciliation by establishing an environment for peace and easing military tensions on the Korean peninsula".

In response, the USA leader wanted Kim to have no doubts that the US can, too, destroy North Korea with "fire and fury".

It's a move that complicates the position for the Trump administration, potentially making direct United States military action against the Kim regime more hard - if not impossible.

In a letter addressed to North Korean representative Ri Son Gwon on Friday, South Korea's Ministry of Unification (MoU) proposed a high level meeting on January 15 to discuss the DPRK's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, according to the MoU spokesperson's office.

No sitting USA president is known to have spoken with a North Korean leader.

North Korean officials met their southern counterparts on Tuesday for the first such talks in two years. The decision to send delegation to Winter Olympics could be marked as the beginning of the official dialogue for peace between countries and become a path to open dialogue channels focusing on security issues.

An Chan-Il, a defector researcher who runs the World Institute for North Korea Studies, said the cheerleaders are cherry-picked by the regime based on tough criteria. Such a strike could be triggered by evidence that North Korea was fueling an ICBM, the official said. It has, however, retained back-channel communications through the North's diplomatic mission at the United Nations in NY.

On Monday, the International Olympic Committee extended the deadline for North Korean athletes to register for the Games.

"Not helpful enough, but they have been very helpful".

North Korea failed to qualify any athletes four years ago.

They marched together at the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Summer Olympics, and at the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics, but more recent attempts at joining forces have proved unsuccessful.
