RORY McILROY has revealed his secret heart scare - and how he will now require routine medical check-ups for the foreseeable future.

Four-time major victor McIlroy returns to the golf course next week in the Abu Dhabi Championship after a four-month break as he recovered from a rib injury.

"I have a flat T-wave and I'll have to get an echo [cardiogram] on my heart every six months and an MRI scan every year", McIlory told the Telegraph. He says he'll get an electrocardiogram every six months and an MRI once per year.

"I suffered a really bad viral infection in China 18 months ago", McIlroy said.

He didn't sound overly concerned about the condition, describing it as an "irregularity" that he needs to "stay on top of". "Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", McIlroy said.

"I feel there's been a big reaction to it in the media which there really shouldn't be". Any one of them.

McIlroy suffered the rib injury early in the 2017 campaign and admitted to The Telegraph that he shouldn't have played the U.S. Open.

McIlroy is set to play in next week's Abu Dhabi Championship in Dubai, his first tournament since shutting down his game in October to deal with a fractured rib.

While he has slipped outside the top 10 in the rankings, McIlroy said his focus was purely on winning.

With there being some concerns regarding McIlroy's health in the aftermath of his interview, McIlroy took to Instagram to alleviate those concerns while also expressing excitement for the start of his 2018 season. "I knew within myself that I couldn't compete at the end of last season because I hadn't done the work beforehand, and that's because I hadn't been fit enough and if you can't practice, you can't compete".
