Raiders to hire Cable as offensive line coach

13 January 2018

Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden reportedly hired another member of his staff on Friday night, and named Edgar Bennett the team's wide receivers coach, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Coach Gruden got things started with his opening statement.

Prior to Gruden's official hiring, the Fritz Pollard Alliance initially downplayed concerns that the Raiders were in compliance with the Rooney Rule.

Davis has not said that Gruden verbally accepted the job, but used the phrase "all in" to describe how Gruden felt about the job.

The 53-year-old originally joined Oakland in 2007, serving as the team's offensive line coach in 2007 and the first portion of 2008 before taking over as head coach during the latter season after Lane Kiffin was sacked. Thus implying that he had a verbal agreement with Gruden before he fired Del Rio. "And that's the term that we were using in our discussions and everything, are you all-in? And this time he didn't waver, either", Davis said. The interim tag was lifted in 2009, and he coached the Raiders to an 8-8 record in 2010.

Although Cable has a history with the Raiders, he and Gruden never crossed paths.

But they're making a total sham of the Rooney Rule. Then-Detroit Lions general manager Matt Millen was fined $200,000 for circumventing the rule when he hired Steve Mariucci as the team's head coach in 2003. The Raiders had seven straight losing seasons before finishing.500 in what would be Cable's last season with the club. His final game with Oakland was among the most controversial losses in National Football League history, when the Raiders lost to the New England Patriots on the infamous Tom Brady "Tuck Rule" non-fumble call.

Gruden beat the Raiders in the Super Bowl in his first season with the Buccaneers but didn't win another playoff game for Tampa Bay in his final six seasons.

Gruden was signed to a 10-year contract worth as much as $100 million to replace Jack Del Rio, who was sacked on the same day as the Raiders' season finale.
