Mason teacher admits to making lynching comment to student

13 January 2018

"He was in class and the teacher told him that if he didn't get on task his friends are going to form an angry mob and lynch you", Agee-Bell said, adding that the school is predominantly white.

She believed the 13-year-old had perhaps taken a comment out of context and contacted the teacher, Renee Thole, whom Agee-Bell says owned up to what she'd done.

Agee-Bell said this happened during the first week of December, but her son did not tell her about it until a week later because he thought he might get in trouble for talking back, telling his teacher what she said was racist.

"I believe Mason is a community that is OK with the way it is", Agee-Bell said.

Thole would apologize in class for offending Nathan and said she didn't have harmful intentions.

Welling up with tears, Tanisha accused Mason City Schools of setting up initiatives such as LGBTQ safe spaces for children, but failing to take advice on how to prevent vulnerable kids from being bullied.

"As educators, sometimes we mess up".

Carson said there are no plans to remove Thole from the classroom, but a letter of reprimand has been placed in her personnel file.

According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), between 1882 and the rise of the civil rights movement almost a century later, more than 3,440 African-Americans were lynched due to their color.

Renee Thole, a teacher at Mason Middle School, was reprimanded and ordered to undergo cultural sensitivity training by schools officials, according to OH media reports.

"I told her, 'Next time you're frustrated are you going to call him a n*gger?'" Agee-Bell said.

The school district released a statement about the incident that was published by Fox19.

Agee-Bell said she planned to speak during a school board meeting Tuesday night, but was asked by officials to talk privately afterward instead. Carson said that Thole apologized in class and felt "awful" about the comment.

Thole offered Nathan an apology in class, saying she meant no harm by her comment.

"The hardest part is that even though he knows he did nothing wrong, he still is punished because he lost opportunity with his friends", Agee-Bell said. "It was awesome that (Nathan) was fearless enough to confront the teacher". "Sometimes these are said out of genuine ignorance", Kist-Kline wrote. "Clearly, that was the case here", the district said. Anyone who does so faces disciplinary action.

The school went on to say that they "will continue to invest in training and resources on culturally proficient practices".

Agee-Bell said she doesn't allow Nathan to play with Airsoft guns because she fears neighbors will call police, and she blames herself for moving to Mason. However, she said the district "investigated, documented, and set expectations for (the) future".
