Federal Government Grants LA Millions To Combat Homelessness

13 January 2018

Housing and Urban Development grants meant to reduce homelessness, it was announced Thursday.

It's part of a $2 billion nationwide effort to help more than 7,300 programs. "Progress is being made but we must remain resolute in our mutual commitment to more innovatively and effectively address homelessness through a housing-first approach that is evidence based".

A list of the groups in Florida helping the homeless and getting Continuum of Care grants from HUD can be found here.

An analysis from the liberal-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said all three proposals would result in fewer people receiving housing help from the federal government and warned that some of those who can't get help will end up homeless.

California received the largest share of any state, with almost $382.6 million for 900 programs.

Kevin Gates Released From Prison
The Baton Rouge rapper served nine months of a 30-month sentence for a weapons-related warrant in an IL state prison. Gates previously spent time in prison after he was convicted of kicking a female fan during a performance in Florida.

HUD-funded strategies have led to a 22 percent reduction in the homeless population in Western New York since 2010, according to Regional Administrator Lynne Patton. On the other hand, the report said, veteran homelessness decreased 4.1 percent and chronic homelessness decreased by 35.9 percent.

Last month, HUD reported homelessness crept up in the US, especially among individuals experiencing long-term chronic homelessness.

At least 553,742 people in the USA experienced at least one night of homelessness a year ago, according to HUD. In addition to coordinating funding for area homeless programs, they will count all local homeless people in a single night at a later point in the year.

In counts conducted in early 2017, the West Coast spike was so high that it raised the overall homelessness figure for the first time since 2010, to almost 554,000 people.

HUD's mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all.
