The OLED display illuminates the fingerprint, the sensor scans it and sends it back to the phone's processor (or host or application processor, depending on your preferred term) to be matched.
Because of this, manufacturers had to make compromises in the placement of the sensor, with many opting to put it at the back of the phone.
But things don't have to be this way.
The smartphone with the Vivo In Display Fingerprint Scanning technology can be unlocked by placing your finger on a specific part of the display. Synaptics late previous year announced that it entered mass manufacturing with its optical in-display fingerprint sensors, called Clear ID.
Apart from its highlight in-display fingerprint sensor, nothing else is known about the smartphone as of now. For one, people screw up their screens all the time.
Vivo Shows Off a Phone with In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
A fingerprint icon on the lockscreen shows you where to place your finger.
The actual phone that we demoed with vivo is still not finalized.
Registering your fingerprint works the same way it does on a phone with a regular fingerprint sensor. While it travels on the surface, it creates a 3D map of the fingerprint under the display. "Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience". The company says that the technology offers a more convenient way of unlocking your handset. As soon as you press the icon on the screen, it has a Gestures function, which activates the Synaptics optical sensor with a cool tap animation to let you know that you have clicked and now can unlock the phone. Once you place it down, this icon will shine brighter to illuminate your finger bright enough for the sensor to see. If you're just slightly off, it usually fails to recognize it. The chip-maker went on to explain that the sensors were developed as an "integrated solution" that would work in tandem with the chip-maker's expansive line of Snapdragon CPUs for mobile devices.
In-display fingerprint scanner was long awaited by smartphone fraternities since the advent of bezel-less displays.
As much as I enjoy using Face ID on my iPhone X, sometimes a fingerprint sensor is just more practical.
