Malaysian opposition announces 92-year-old will run for Prime Minister

12 January 2018

"Their blood, sweat and tears, and personal sacrifice in championing Anwar over the 20 years he was oppressed by Dr Mahathir have been dismissed in a blink of an eye", he said on Twitter today.

Johor Baru Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said Dr Mahathir has hijacked the opposition after the former premier was named as the coalition's choice for prime minister. "It's a tragedy to their own cause....anyway, I thank (the opposition) for making it even easier for (the ruling coalition) to win the upcoming general election".

Lajim who is also the State's opposition leader said he could not comprehend Dr Mahathir's stand when he had mentioned of retiring from politics and yet does not mind being named as the prime ministerial candidate after leaving the post nearly 20 years ago. Without the pardon, Anwar would be barred from politics for five years.

And having made up with the former deputy prime minister, Dr Mahathir will pick his ex-protege as the next prime minister after Anwar, 70, is released from jail and pardoned by the Malaysian King.

He must call elections by August and political tensions are rising.

Surprisingly, the Selangor chapter of Anwar's Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is also against Dr Mahathir's nomination.

The announcement January 7 by the four-party Hope Alliance puts an end to squabbling over the thorny issue and is seen as a major show of unity ahead of polls that must be held by August but are widely expected in the second quarter.

After serving his time, Mr Anwar led an opposition alliance to stunning electoral gains in 2013. Anwar was freed in 2004 but in 2015 he returned to prison following a second sodomy conviction that critics said was a political conspiracy to break up the opposition.

He likened such desperate arrangement to the rotation of Chief Ministers in Sabah in the mid-1990s when Dr Mahathir was Prime Minister which also created problems in the State's administration and did not benefit Sabah and the people due to changes of policies and approaches. Mr Najib's coalition lost the popular vote in that election, but won a majority of the seats in parliament. "So let's, together with him, make it happen".

While many hailed Sunday's announcement, saying that Mahathir is the only leader capable of uniting a fractured opposition alliance and launching a challenge to the Najib-led National Front ruling alliance, others questioned the decision.

A political observer said although Dr Mahathir brought invaluable experience to the opposition table, the former premier was associated with many controversies and scandals that plagued his administration.

The corruption scandal Mr Najib is embroiled in involves a state fund, 1MDB. In civil lawsuits, the U.S. Justice Department has alleged that about $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB.

And Najib, who founded 1MDB and has denied all allegations of corruption against him, was cleared of wrongdoing by Malaysia's attorney-general.
