Devin Nunes didn't divulge secrets in Russian Federation investigation, House Ethics Committee says

Nunes also said he was dismayed that the investigation took an "unbelievable" eight months to complete, and that it was conducted by the full committee outside of its typical process, which includes a non-partisan staff review of complaints before they are taken up by the committee. A Nunes spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment on that Thursday evening. Nunes then controversially went to brief President Trump on the information before meeting with the Intelligence Committee.

It was not clear whether Nunes would formally resume leadership of the House Intelligence Committee's investigation.

"Based exclusively on the conclusion of these classification experts that the information that Representative Nunes disclosed was not classified, the Committee will take no further action and considers this matter closed", it said.

Nunes stepped away from his role at the head of the probe April 6, the day the Ethics Committee announced it was investigating him. Based on their findings, the committee ruled that Nunes did not break any classification rules and closed the matter.

"Based exclusively on the conclusion of these classification experts that the information that Representative Nunes disclosed was not classified, the committee will take no further action and considers this matter closed", the statement said. Nunes also asked the committee to release transcripts related to its investigation. At a news conference in March after the trip to the White House, Nunes had said that communications involving Trump associates had been swept up by USA spy agencies and, he suggested, mishandled by the Obama administration. The announcement of Nunes' innocence comes as the house panel met with dozens of witnesses, and conducted a series of interviews as they push for the probe's conclusion.

In March, Nunes held a news conference in which he discussed viewing intelligence reports in which the names of Trump associates were "unmasked" by then-National Security Adviser Susan Rice in the final weeks of the Obama administration. "Both this House and the American people would undoubtedly benefit from such an act of transparency and accountability to bolster confidence that partisanship does not infect the Ethics Committee's investigations". The meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya has come under the microscope because Trump Jr. accepted the invitation from British publicist Rob Goldstone after being promised Veselnitskaya would provide incriminating information about Hillary Clinton. Goldstone helped set up the meeting. CNN reported that none of the newly disclosed emails were sent directly to Trump Jr., who has said there was no follow-up to the meeting.

Another email sent June 14, 2016, from Goldstone to one of the participants in the meeting, Ike Kaveladze, included a screenshot of a CNN story about Russian Federation being suspected in a hack of Democratic National Committee electronic files.

It is unclear what is meant by the email, which was read to The Associated Press. It's completely out of the blue.
