Mariners, Angels acquire int'l slot money

07 December 2017

Ohtani, the 23-year-old two-way star, is not believed to put a high priority on finances as he makes his decision, which must come by December 22.

The Seattle Mariners made a similar deal with the Twins in order to acquire worldwide slot money of their own on Wednesday night.

The Seattle Mariners announced they traded minor league catcher David Banuelos to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for the global slot money. He remains a free agent. Rosenthal suggested both teams were "clearly adding money for Ohtani", although Pearson previously received a $1 million signing bonus. The Rangers still have the most dollars of the seven finalists at $3.53 million.

The Los Angeles Angels have acquired $1 million in worldwide slot money in a deal with the Minnesota Twins, sending 2017 third-round pick Jacob Pearson back in exchange.

Several hundred protesters gathered outside the US consulate in Istanbul, a Reuters cameraman at the scene said. Hamas urged Arabs and Muslims to "undermine United States interests in the region " and to "shun Israel".

The move paves the way for Los Angeles to increase their financial offer to Shohei Ohtani in an attempt to bring the two-way Japanese star aboard.

Banuelos was a fifth-round draft pick this year from Long Beach State. In 65 games at the plate, he hit.332/.403/.540 with eight home runs, 31 RBI and 16 doubles. Also, all three major league outfielders - Mike Trout, Justin Upton and Kole Calhoun - are now signed through 2020, at least. His elite throwing arm and excellent blocking skills earned him a spot on the NorthWest League's all-star team and made him one of the Mariners better prospects.

A delegation from the Mariners met with Ohtani on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the offices of Creative Artists Agency. The Dodgers, Angels and Giants met with him on Monday. Due to his age, Ohtani can only sign a minor league contract and is subject to the worldwide bonus pool. They were not among the teams invited to meet with Ohtani, so they didn't have as much use for the extra money.
