07 December 2017

German teenager Max Burkhart has died of injuries sustained in a crash during a Nor Am Cup race in Lake Louise, Alpine Canada said in statement.

A spokesperson from Lake Louise Ski Resort says staff and everyone who helped keep him alive on the hill after the incident sends their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, teammates, and everyone competing in the event.

The skier was taken to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary by STARS air ambulance after crashing into safety netting at about 2:20 p.m.

Burkhart lost control during his training run on the afternoon of December 5 and suffered serious, life-threatening injuries to his lower body.

California Wildfires Continue to Spread, Closing Freeways and Destroying Homes
According to the Los Angeles Times thousands of homes were still threatened by flames, 27,000 people were forced to flee. The fires have have now crossed over the main coastal highway and reached the Pacific Ocean, on America's West Coast.

Burkhart is the second ski racer to die in the Canadian Rockies this winter, after French World Cup skier David Poisson lost his life during a training crash at nearby Nakiska ski resort three weeks ago.

Max Burkhart was a member of Skiclub Partenkirchen in Germany and officials from the club confirmed that he was badly injured during the NorAm competition.

Burkhart's death comes soon after another tragedy.

"It's easy to forget just how risky ski racing can be", said Higgins, himself a former Nor-Am and NCAA skier. "Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine encourage the ski family around the world to support the athlete's family and teammates through this hard time", officials said in a statement to 660 NEWS.
