Federation Internationale de Football Association lifts Kuwait ban; Gulf Cup to go ahead

07 December 2017

Kuwait had been suspended by FIFA since October 2015 for government interference in the operations of its football association.

Qatar, Iraq, Oman, Kuwait and Yemen will be the teams participating with Oman coach Pim Verbeek announcing a camp by calling up 26 probables on Wednesday. The ban meant Kuwait missed out on the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 Asian Cup, and before that the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"I would like to reiterate to his highness that the FIFA Council unanimously decided at its meeting to lift the suspension from Kuwait", he was quoted as saying by state news agency KUNA. Kuwait's Parliament adopted a new Sports Law of Kuwait that replaces its previous laws and is amended to reflect the obligations presented by the International Football Federation's (FIFA) Statutes.

But FIFA chief Infantino flew to Kuwait yesterday to meet with officials before making the eagerly-awaited announcement in the afternoon, bringing the country back into the worldwide football fold.

Sheikh Hamad added that he had previously stated that the Gulf Cup would be incomplete without Kuwait who have dominated the tournament with 10 titles, and now that they are back he wouldn't mind if the event is hosted by them.

December 22 but details of the fixtures will be finalised at a meeting of the Gulf Cup Football Federation on Monday.
