Ball State upsets No. 9 Notre Dame

07 December 2017

Ball State has not produced a resume the NCAA selection committee has deemed tournament-worthy since the 1999-2000 season, but the Cardinals beat a perennial March Madness participant on Tuesday night.

After an impressive season last year culminating in a 13-1 Ivy League record, the Quakers hope to return to conference play with that defensive prowess they exhibited on the court in years past, but they recognize that a new Penn identity is ready to be forged. The Cardinals led by eight points with six minutes to go before the break, but the Fighting Irish closed the gap with a 7-0 run that included a three-point conversion by Martinas Geben.

"I think the two games that we haven't played really in my eyes, I thought that Oklahoma, we were a disaster", Whitford said.

It was the fourth straight win for the Cardinals (5-4), with all four coming against in-state opponents. - In the team's first home game since November 11, the No. 3/2 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team powered past Michigan State, 90-59, on Wednesday night inside Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.

Riding a three-game winning streak, Ball State has excelled shooting the ball from the field, behind the 3-point line and from the free-throw line.

Jenna Allen led Michigan State (5-3) with 28 points, and Lexi Gussert had 11. Persons, sophomore Kyle Mallers and Teague are averaging double-digit performances at 15.3, 12 and 10.9, respectively. Matt Farrell nailed a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to tie the game, but Persons answered.

After nearly defeating No. 1 UConn on December 3, the Fighting Irish (7-1) will be hungry for a win against the Quakers.

Prosecutors charged Garcia Zarate with murder, arguing that he planned to kill somebody when he picked up the gun. Garcia-Zarate is a seven-time convicted felon and had been deported from the USA five times.

It will not be an easy task against Notre Dame, which is averaging 80.1 points on 50.3 percent shooting from the field.

Tuesday will be the first time Ball State plays a Top 25 opponent since December 20, 2014, when it faced No. 17 San Diego State.

"With Notre Dame you are going to be getting a top-three team in the country, who came a play or two from beating the No. 1 team in the country". The sophomore guard has committed just seven turnovers all season. However, the Cardinals turned the ball over 49 times in that same stretch, so limiting turnovers will be a key against a Fighting Irish team that forces nine turnovers per game.

NO. 18 WEST VIRGINIA 68, NO. 15 VIRGINIA 61: Jevon Carter had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Lamont West scored 22 points, and West Virginia sent the Cavaliers to their first loss.

"I'll be following them, and I'll be rooting for them because we need them to win, right?"

"The guards did a great job passing the ball into me", Shepard said.
