Better Business Bureau Serving the Northwest is reminding donors to be wary of charity fraud this holiday season, especially with Giving Tuesday coming up and an increase in charity scams.

But by 2015, Giving Tuesday had spread to 98 countries and raised approximately $177 million, according to the campaign's official website.

President and CEO of BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota Susan Adams Loyd says it's extremely hard to review charities that don't disclose information, especially for Giving Tuesday.

But much like Small Business Saturday, we'd like to encourage folks to think a little more locally when making a donation to a charitable cause today.

Several area institutions and organizations are asking for your help and donations this time of year, specifically on Giving Tuesday. Last year, we were able to raise more than $100,000 for our partner charities.

But these are by no means the only local charities or nonprofits worth supporting. Many national groups are involved in Giving Tuesday, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Planned Parenthood and more.

"Non-profits do a lot of good work, really important work and without community support, we can't do it".

Millions of people donate money, time, and resources to causes they feel passionate about each year. Before you give, be sure you have the exact name of the charity to avoid a case of mistaken identity.
