Mayor injured in clash at Corporation meet

Clashes broke out between CPM and BJP councillors at the corporation council meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, injuring the mayor. The Mayor, along with a number of councillors from both sides were admitted to hospitals.The unprecedented attack on the Mayor invited severe criticism.

Tensions erupted during the special council meeting on Saturday after some heated exchanges between the councillors in connection with the installation of high-mast lights in the city.

"The attack was pre-planned and the incident can not be trivalised.Stern action will be taken against those behind the attack", Vijayan told reporters here after visiting the mayor at the medical college hospital here. Three BJP councillors V G Girikumar, R C Beena and M Lekshmi, who were injured in the clashes are under treatment at the General Hospital.

Meantime, a case of murder attempt has been registered against BJP councillors and activists over the attack towards the mayor. Mr. Prasanth was rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital where he was admitted at the Critical Care Unit with injuries on his head and leg. CPI (M) councillors Rasiya Beegum, Sindhu and Mayor's staff member B. Mohan were also admitted to the hospital. When the mayor left his chamber after completing other proceedings in the council hall, BJP councillors reportedly manhandled him. Mayor and CPM leader V K Prasanth was injured in the melee and hospitalised.
