Four People Killed in Northern California Shooting

15 November 2017

The gunman who left four dead after a rampage in Northern California Tuesday had attempted to enter an elementary school during his killing spree - but was prevented because the school was on lockdown.

Authorities said the shooting, which occurred between Chico and Redding, began as a "domestic violence incident" around 8 a.m. and spanned multiple locations, including Rancho Tehama School at 17357 Stagecoach Road, Corning, where several shots were fired.

"Rancho Tehama resident Salvador Tello said he was taking his three children to school when the gunman fired at a truck in front of him".

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston stated that the shooter was "randomly picking targets".

One student at the elementary school was hit by gunfire and transported to the local hospital for treatment, Johnston said. The shooter himself has been killed by police and several victims are now being treated at a local hospital.

Tiffany's husband, Brian Rodgers, said another witness reported seeing a white pickup drive through the school gate and start shooting. He says he and his roommate told police that their neighbour was acting "crazy" and threatening them. Officers recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns, which they believe were used by the shooter. There are just four teachers on staff; each teaches at least two grades, according to the school newsletter.

Rancho Tehama Elementary is a small school, serving students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
