The lawsuit seeks class-action status and unspecified damages under California anti-discrimination law.
The lawsuit submitted in California state court in Oakland is at least the third submitted this year by black employees who informed they were addressed using racial slurs which the company overlooked their complaints.
Vaughn alleged in the lawsuit that his supervisors and co-workers routinely called him the n-word shortly after he started his job.
Mr. Vaughn says he was sacked in October for "not having a positive attitude".
Tesla has yet to issue a statement regarding the impending lawsuit.
Almost one-third of Tesla's workforce, about 10,000 employees in all, is based at the Fremont plant that houses three product lines: the Model S battery-sedan, the Model X battery-SUV, and the new Model 3. Last February, CEO Musk claimed in an interview with Gizmodo that one employee was "paid by the UAW to join Tesla and agitate for a union".
The lawsuit was filed in the California state court in Oakland on Monday (13 November) and is at least the third filed this year by black workers.
Tesla has been sued for gender discrimination, anti-LGBTQ harassment, unlawful firings, and ageism. He also claimed he was passed over for promotions because he complained to HR, according to Business Insider.

According to Monday's complaint, Musk sent an email to Tesla factory employees on May 31. "Sometimes these things happen unintentionally, in which case you should apologise".
"In fairness, if someone is a jerk to you, but sincerely apologizes, it is important to be thick-skinned and accept that apology", Tesla's C.E.O wrote in an email. He said that he and other employees were considering unionizing and had reached out to UAW for help.
Organ said Tesla isn't doing enough.
Tesla is also reportedly facing lawsuits alleging discrimination against gay and older employees, but it has denied those claims. "It's somewhat akin to saying 'stop being politically correct.' When you have a diverse workforce, you need to take steps to make sure everyone feels welcome in that workforce".
