Police shoot vehicle to stop it, killing driver

14 November 2017

A 19-year-old was fatally shot by police late Sunday night after the first officer responding to a call for "possible gunshots" fired at a vehicle seen leaving the scene, the DA probing the shooting said. Fall River Police say the shooting and arrests are related.

Officers were called to a disturbance on Riggenbach Road near Airport Road at approximately 11:45 p.m. Sunday. The caller told police a green hatchback vehicle was smoking and reported hearing bangs that sounded like gunshots.

About three hours later, officers responded to a disturbance at nearby Charlton Memorial Hospital. The caller was unsure if it was a crash or a fight.

The office of Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn said on Monday that officers observed "a number of vehicles leaving the area" when they initially approached the intersection.

MA authorities say a police officer responding to a report of possible gunfire fired shots at a vehicle to stop it from leaving, killing the driver.
