Though McGowan didn't provide any comment to the Times, she took to Twitter primarily to speak out against Weinstein, his enablers and Hollywood and society more broadly. The sanctions came after the Charmed and Nip/Tuck star talked about the Weinstein allegations. Earlier this week, in light of the scandal, Amazon said "we are reviewing our options for the projects we have with The Weinstein Company". The social network's lack of transparency has led to a great deal of frustration and confusion.
Twitter's explanation behind the decision to lock McGowan's account was because she had "violated" their rules, but it's still not clear exactly which tweets resulted in the suspension.
She tweeted: "Join me in supporting this important cause at iPetitions".
Twitter provided no specific instances of her rule violation, but stated that she can delete the tweets that violate its rules to gain access to her account more quickly.
McGowan has been among the most vocal in Hollywood about sexual abuse in the industry.
Iran stun Germany 4-0, enter knock-out round
Iran will surely not give them such a luxury this evening. "We respected the German team and we did not underestimate them". Goa will be alive and awake to the night today as they host the States favourite team Brazil for the second time in a year.
In her posts - which were directed at Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos - McGowan claims that she told the head of Amazon Studios about the incident. "Be my voice." She then included the hashtags #RoseArmy and #WhyWomenDon'tReport.
Her account of the producer demanding a naked massage became public in a New Yorker story published this week. McGowan referred to it as a suspension. "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices", the company added.
Affleck was also called out by Twitter at large for both supporting his brother, director and actor Casey Affleck, when he was accused a year ago of sexual harassment on the set of his movie Manchester by the Sea.
After hours of silence, Twitter has finally issued a response. Twitter has yet to comment on the matter.
The move on Twitter's part to suspend the account - whatever the justification - provoked a storm of outrage online, with high-profile users of the platform sending a barrage of critical replies.
