Trump Threatens To Revoke Broadcast Licenses Of Networks That Criticize Him

Trump later dealt with the issue during a joint media appearance with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, telling a questioner: "It's frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write". He called the report "pure fiction, made up to demean", adding, "NBC=CNN".

"I never discussed increasing it (N-arsenal)".

Television licenses are generally given to local stations, not national networks, so the White House would have to challenge a bunch of NBC affiliates to black out the network. They can not influence, they can not dictate, so unfortunately for Donald Trump just because somebody says something that he doesn't like, that doesn't give you grounds as president to revoke their license and prohibit them from operating in the United States.

The request was what reportedly led Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to call Trump a "moron".

Senator Ed Markey wrote to Mr Pai on Wednesday, asking him to "withstand any urges from President Trump to harm the news media and infringe upon the First Amendment", a reference to the US Constitution's free speech and press freedom guarantee.

"It is inappropriate for the President to propose challenging broadcasters' licences because he disagrees with their coverage", that letter read.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an independent federal agency, does not license broadcast networks but issues them to individual broadcast stations that are renewed on a staggered basis for eight-year periods.

While the commissioners of the FCC are appointed by the President and approved by the Senate, the agency's relative independence is there by design to push back on situations where someone in the executive branch would attempt to dampen the free speech protections provided to licensed broadcasters.

That imprisonment was widely seen as indicative of the increased targeting of journalists in that country, which has been scrutinized for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government crackdown on media freedoms.

Trump questioned whether FCC licenses should be taken from NBC after the network published a story on Wednesday saying he had called for a tenfold increase in the US nuclear arsenal in a meeting with military and security officials. "Please report for duty".

Private health insurance overhaul promises more affordable premiums
The health insurance package will also scrap coverage for some natural therapies, such as yoga, aromatherapy, Pilates and tai chi. But it's expected a cut to the price insurers must pay for some medical devices will drive the biggest reduction in premiums.
