So, if Waititi actually takes this gig and ends up adapting Akira, it would appear the project is in good hands. Otomo himself adapted the manga for an acclaimed 1988 anime film. The anime is rightly considered a groundbreaking piece of work and helped popularize anime in the West.

Sitting down with the late night talk show host to discuss his third and final Thor solo, Hemsworth got a few good minutes talking about what it was like working with Ragnarok co-star Mark Ruffalo and director Taika Waititi when Kimmel made a decision to shift the camera backstage to talk with the Hulk star.

But now it looks suspiciously like there may have been something in the rumours, as Matt Damon coincidentally turned up on Jimmy Kimmel to unceremoniously crash Chris Hemsworth's interview ahead of the film's release in a few weeks. "I would do an adaptation of the books".

"I would not do a remake of the movie". I would do an adaptation of the books... "I would do an adaptation of the books".

Warner Bros. has been developing a live-action movie of the Akira anime for years now, but Waititi said he's not interested in remaking that classic movie. For Waititi, there's only one way to approach the issue of casting.

Actually Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent. When asked if he was going to direct it, he said, "I am - that was more or less a rumor".

Thor: Ragnarok is in cinemas November 3. Live action anime is also a tricky genre to tackle, and it hasn't fared well in recent times. With the growing awareness of and backlash against Hollywood's long penchant for "whitewashing" casting of stories featuring Asian characters, many fans have been concerned that will happen again if a live-action Akira movie does ever happen. That's saying nothing about past attempts like The Fist Of The North Star, The Last Airbender and Dragonball: Evolution either.

Warner still wants to make a live-action Akira film, despite cycling through several directors and scripts over the years.
