Moscow has lodged a protest with Washington, accusing USA officials of tearing down Russian flags from two of its diplomatic missions in the country, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia intends, if necessary, to demand the United States should reduce the American diplomatic mission further.

She said Moscow regards the incident as an outrage against Russia's state symbol, adding that Moscow has already "expressed a strong protest to the United States".

"The Russian side will decide on retaliatory measures", Zakharova said. We perceive this as an "extremely unfriendly move, the statement said".
