MI mom jailed for not vaccinating son loses primary custody

12 October 2017

The mother from Ferndale, Michigan who refused to get her 9-year-old son vaccinated went to jail for five days after refusing a judge's order.

Oakland County Judge Karen McDonald ruled Wednesday that Rebecca Bredow will no longer have primary custody of the boy but will have joint custody with her ex-husband, James Horne.

On Monday, Horne had the vaccines administered, while the child was under his custody.

Rebecca Bredow, the MI anti-vax mother who was jailed because she refused to let her son receive vaccinations, was not happy to learn that her son received four immunizations this week. In the intervening time, Bredow had physical custody, while Horne took charge of the boy on alternate weekends.

Bredow and Horne split in 2008, before their son was born. Bredow, on the other hand, was near tears as she discussed her stint in prison and the court rulings.

The attorney for her daughter's father says the daughter's doctor recommended the vaccines and said her church allows them.

The specific reason that Bredow was in contempt of court is that she had consented to have her son vaccinated in court pleadings late a year ago, although Vitale says that those pleadings were filed "in error", according to USA Today. "If not, you will appear here Wednesday and if you have not, I'll send you to jail".

Bredow was sentenced to seven days in jail for not following a court's consent order to vaccinate her son.

Bredow's attorney Steven Vitale was allocated 21 days to object.
