Grayson defends McGeady for celebrating in front of Preston fans

The 31-year-old was delighted to score against his former club and he made that abundantly clear with his goal celebration.

McGeady joined Sunderland from Preston over the summer after enjoying a good spell on loan at the Lilywhites last season.

Aiden McGeady got a bit excited after scoring against his old club.

"You are allowed to run around any part of the field and celebrate how you want", said Grayson.

This celebration was reminiscent of Emanuel Adebayor's infamous turn of pace to glide from one end of the pitch to the other to slide on his knees in front of the Arsenal fans who had booed him right from kick-off during the meeting of his ex-club and new team, Manchester City in 2009.

Why shouldn't he celebrate, because he was taunted a little bit - unfairly, I thought, because he was exceptional here past year.

The important thing is that we stick together now as a team. "They are so unsafe with counter attacks, they were very effective". I've clearly said that a €100m player is unacceptable for Bayern.

The Black Cats' 10-year tenure in the Premier League came to an end last season as they were relegated in last place, with David Moyes subsequently resigning as manager and Grayson being appointed in his place.

Sunderland managed to stop the rot with a 2-2 draw at Preston but could still not get back to winning ways.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo before his side make the trip south, he said he wasn't surprised by the start of Alex Neil's side: "When I left that football club I left some very talented players".

Also, some Preston fans believe that McGeady ignoring the applause from the home fans during the warmups did not go down well and was a reason for the hostile reaction.

It's not likely, as McGeady nearly certainly meant to cause no offense with what he said, and likely wasn't paying attention to the crowd during the warm up, so his goal celebration was a natural reaction to taking stick you don't feel you deserve.
