Eight Died At Hollywood Nursing Home without Power Supply, After Hurricane Irma

17 September 2017

A statement from the city indicated the facility still had some power.

During a news conference, Thursday morning, City of Hollywood spokesperson Raelin Storey confirmed, "The initial investigation has determined the facility had some power". "If we find anybody did any criminal wrongdoing, we are gonna hold them accountable to the full extent of the law", he said.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said officials were providing ice to 27 senior residence facilities still without power, local media reported.

The other five died at or on the way to the hospital, police said. After a third emergency call, the fire department sent more crews to the scene. That company owns The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, which had eight patients pronounced dead Wednesday. Low temperatures were in the upper 70s.

"There are more electrical people in this state, I think, than ever accumulated anywhere in the world", the president said, referring to the scores of fix teams that have poured in from several states.

Gov. Rick Scott said he was "absolutely heartbroken" to hear of the news and demanded answers as to how the tragedy took place.

Friday afternoon, the state's Agency for Health Care Administration said conditions at the facility present a threat to the safety of residents and it suspended the nursing home indefinitely from taking patients paid for by Florida Medicaid. Fans and spot coolers were being used at the Center on Tuesday, CNN reported.

"I wasn't there, because I swear to God if I was there I can call the police and scream", Veroy told NBC6. "Can't give you anything more specific than that at this point".

Bryant closed the half hitting 17-of-27 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown with 12 carries for 35 yards and another score. LSU's lone score came on Darrel Williams' 10-yard TD run in the first quarter, which made the score 7-7.

Outages had fatal consequences at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hill, a nursing home in Hollywood, Fla., north of Miami. Then, police responded to a 911 call and found three people dead and others in struggling health. In both instances, the nursing home corrected these deficiencies. It gave The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, a for-profit facility with 152 beds, an overall rating of "below average".

"We are disgusted and outraged at the clear neglect and lack of care for our most vulnerable at a Hollywood nursing home".

Four more patients died at or en route to hospital and a fifth was later identified as having died the night before, officials said. Randy Katz, medical director of the hospital's emergency department.

The Florida Department of Health said that "at no time" did the nursing home "report that conditions had become unsafe or that the health and safety of their patients was at risk".

Authorities were also instructed to carry out precautionary checks on other long-term care facilities in the area in the wake of the incident. Rescue workers found a portable gasoline generator running inside the home. Families looking for information can call the hospital hotline at 954-265-1074.

"The loss of these individuals is a profound tragedy", said a statement by the Florida Health Care Association, which represents 81% of Florida's nursing centers. The Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills was incorporated in June 2015 and the hospital announced previous year that it had purchased Palm Springs General Hospital in Hialeah for $40 million.

Hollywood police are investigating the eight deaths.
