6 at South Florida nursing home die amid post-Irma blackout

Florida Light and Power has been called for several days to fix the issue, but crews have not yet been able to come to the home.

Police said the residents' causes of death were not yet known, the Sentinel reported. Sen. "But nobody from the facility has told me anything yet".

When FPL finally did arrive at the Hollywood Hills nursing home Wednesday, after the patients had died, it took FPL workers approximately 20 minutes to get the nursing home back up and running.

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief confirmed three people were pronounced dead at the facility.

Police were first called to the facility at about 4:30 a.m. but authorities did not arrive until after 6 a.m., officials said.

Hurricane Irma's furious march through Florida not only darkened millions of homes, it also flooded roads, piling them with debris and blocking off access to neighborhoods.

Carballo said the nursing home had a working generator and never completely lost power.

"In compliance with state regulations, the Center did have a generator on standby in the event it would be needed to power life safety systems".

"The National Weather Service's tracking in Hollywood put the temperature at 80 to 82 degrees overnight with a heat index of 85 to 90 after a Tuesday afternoon high temperature of 90 and a peak heat index of 99".

Irma struck earlier in the week, officials said.

Footage from the scene on Wednesday morning showed patients being rolled out of the nursing home on stretchers and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Police Chief Tomas Sanchez described the second floor "as excessively hot".

"(We) quickly identified some issues inside the facility with fire rescue and immediately evacuated the building", Katz said.

A total of 133 patients were evacuated, 118 were medical patients at the Rehabilitation Center and 18 were patients at the center's behavioral wing.

Numerous patients were placed on stretchers and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Hollywood Hill's proximity to Memorial Regional was one of reasons Gail Nova stayed there, her son Jeffrey said, so she could seek care as she needed it. "It fit the things she needed". The mother Libia, who also suffers from dementia, was in another nursing facility and doing better.

The incident raised concerns about the welfare of residents at other nursing centers.

A neighbor told FOX35 Orlando generators were not allowed in the community, and officials across Florida are warning people to keep generators outside homes.

The entire facility -which has two wings- was evacuated.
