Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez said that the authorities were investigating the deaths and looking at every possibility, adding that nothing would be ruled out, including a criminal angle to the investigation.

The center did not lose power during the storm, but it lost a transformer that powers the air conditioning, nursing home administrator Jorge Carballo said in a statement late Wednesday.

Devastated friends and family of the eight people who died at a Hollywood nursing home, are trying to piece together what happened, as a criminal investigation gets underway.

As a precaution, police are also visiting 42 other facilities in the city to make sure patients are okay.

The causes of their death were not immediately clear, but the facility, Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, completed a precautionary evacuation of all its patients.

Raelin Story, a Broward County spokesperson, said fire rescue operatives arrived at the home to find the facilities sweltering hot, leaving numerous elderly patients unable to breathe. The utilities have announced that power outage in some area could be extended for days, it could even extend for weeks. Dozens of the state's senior centers still lacked electricity in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, and several facilities were forced to evacuate.

"We're looking into the temperatures inside the facility, the staffing inside the facility and the condition leading up to these incidents", said Storey who also confirmed that police had received a warrant to search inside the facility.

Not counting the nursing home deaths, at least 17 people in Florida have died under Irma-related circumstances, and six more in SC and Georgia, many of them well after the storm had passed.

Officials initially said as many as 158 people had been moved from the center; on Thursday, police clarified that 145 patients were sent to Memorial Regional Hospital - 141 from the center and four from an adjoining facility.

Another 115 residents were evacuated from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. As part of the licensure process, AHCA confirms that the facility's emergency plan has been submitted to local officials.

Medicare records show that the nursing home, owned by Larkin Health Systems Inc., was fined $5,500 in February 2016 for unspecified violations.
