Hiram Patterson and members of the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans filed the TRO lawsuit Wednesday.

The Dallas City Council voted Wednesday to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from its namesake park in Oak Lawn.

Council members on Tuesday night unanimously ordered a statue of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson to be removed from a park in the city's historic downtown district "as soon as possible", spokeswoman Miriam Dickler said by phone.

In Maryland, a statue of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney, who wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision upholding slavery, was removed from the grounds of the Maryland State House. "I ask of you today to allow the task force to do what you asked of us to see this process through".

Last month, after Galvin publicly announced that she would be calling for the removal of the two statues, John Mason, a member of the community commission tasked a year ago with studying what to do about the statues, said he agreed with the decision.

"As much as I disagree with the neo-Nazis, the white supremacists, the people who are wanting to destroy America or those wanting to have communism in this country, everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe", said Armentrout. Callahan abstained from the vote while Greyson cast the only dissenting opinion. He wanted the statue's removal to be put to a voter referendum; the council voted against that idea. More than 50 individuals signed up to voice their feelings before council members voted on a resolution that called for taking down the Lee's likeness immediately. In the wake of the rally, other Southern cities have acted to remove monuments to the Confederacy. Current and future generations need to know the whole story of this bad part of American history. Council says an independent investigation into the August 12 violence is happening now and will be finished by the end of the year. The commission will then make a final presentation to the City Council on November 1.

Those who were in support of removing the Lee statue asserted that it was a symbol of repression against African-Americans while those against argued that removing the monument would erase history.

WUSA9 reported that the city council was packed and emotions ran high during the meeting over the highly charged issue.

The bottom line for the mayor's task force is this: Getting people to work together is hard work and heart work.
