Montgomery Gentry's Troy Gentry Dies in Helicopter Crash at 50

Montgomery Gentry star Troy Gentry has been killed in a helicopter crash.

The band tweeted just hours before the crash, writing, "Heading to Medford, New Jersey to play tomorrow!"

Montgomery Gentry's scheduled performance on Friday night in New Jersey was cancelled.

"It's a chemistry that's worked for years", Gentry said of Montgomery Gentry in an interview on the duo's website.

The statement continued: "Details of the crash are unknown". Troy Gentry was 50 years old.

Gentry was due to perform with his bandmate Eddie Montgomery last evening at the Flying W Airport and Resort in Medford.

In 1999, Montgomery Gentry won the favorite new country artist prize at the American Music Awards.

Medford Township Police Chief Richard Meder said authorities received a call about the "distressed" helicopter and arrived on the scene before the crash.

The cause of the helicopter crash is still under investigation.

The band mixed country music with Southern rock and was known for their blue-collar anthems.

Gentry married Angie McClure in 1999, and had two daughters - Taylor, from a previous marriage, and Kaylee, born in 2002. The song was the debut single from the bands first album, "Tattoos and Scars".
