OH judge wounded in courthouse shooting, suspect killed

21 August 2017

A gunman shot and wounded a judge in an ambush outside an OH courthouse on Monday before the assailant was fatally shot by a probation officer, authorities and local media said.

Bruzzese, Jr. fired back at the attackers, as did a probation officer, after at least one of the suspects opened fire, Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis told reporters.

Bruzzese was taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese was shot as he walked toward the entrance of the courthouse just after 8 a.m., the Herald-Star reported.

A probation officer returned fire at the gunman, killing him, according to WTOV.

The Associated Press reports the suspect's body could be seen lying next to a vehicle of a neighboring bank drive-thru.

Neither the suspected shooter nor his suspected accomplice were immediately identified.

In a brief update on Facebook, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the courthouse would remain closed until further notice. Jefferson County Commissioner Thomas Graham told WTOV that some courthouse workers witnessed the "tragic situation" and that people would need time to process what had happened.
