NHL Legend Bryan Murray Dies From Cancer At 74

"Bryan Murray's strength and character were reflected in the teams he coached and the teams he built over decades of front office excellence", Bettman said.

In 1998, South Florida coaches Jimmy Johnson, Pat Riley, Jim Leyland and Bryan Murray stand together with 10-year-old Michael Fernandez at the fifth annual Make-a-Wish Foundation of South Florida Sports Banquet & Memorabilia Auction at the Signature Grand in Davie.

Longtime NHL coach and GM Bryan Murray died Saturday, the NHL confirmed, after a long battle with colon cancer during which he became a passionate spokesman for awareness and prevention of the disease.

"As we mourn Bryan's passing, we celebrate his many contributions to the game - as well as his courage".

He last coached in 2007-08 and was Ottawa's GM until stepping down to an advisory capacity last season because of his health.

Things changed for good in 1982-83, the first season Murray was paired with General Manager David Poile.

Murray coached the Red Wings from 1990-93, compiling a 124-91-29 record and leading the Red Wings to the 1991-92 Norris Division championship. He said Bryan Murray was as complete a hockey man as there is. When Murray was honored by his peers at the general managers meeting in Florida in 2015, Fletcher spoked about Murray's ability as a scout.

Laughlin said Murray was one of the first player-friendly coaches at a time when others were "flexing their muscles" as strict tacticians.

"To this day, he is the best hockey scout I have ever seen".

"He was an absolute players' coach that in my career you would go through the wall for because of your respect for him as a person and as a hockey coach", Laughlin said.

"That was", Murray said last season, "as much fun as any of us had in hockey". He watches about three shifts and he says, 'I'm not sure what you guys are anxious about.

All told, three of his teams - the Panthers, Ducks and Sens - made it to the Stanley Cup Finals under his watch. He also served as GM for the Red Wings, Panthers, Ducks and Senators.

"The Bears are saddened to hear of the passing of former head coach Bryan Murray", the team said in a statement.

"But Bryan's legacy goes far beyond his success on the ice, including his courageous fight with cancer and countless contributions to the communities he served".

I remember Bryan for his unfailing graciousness (although many National Hockey League referees might disagree as he was known to yell at them from time to time), loyalty, and especially his quick wit and sense of humor.

But with playoff appearances came the playoff disappointments that now are standard in Washington and, after the Capitals won just 18 of their first 46 games in the 1989-90 season, they fired Murray and replaced him with his brother, Terry, causing some consternation in a family that included 10 brothers and sisters.
