Local governments caught off guard by Elon Musk's Hyperloop

23 July 2017

A White House spokesman wouldn't say who talked to Musk or whether he met with officials in person.

The company added that it expects to cinch all the "formal approvals necessary to break ground" by the end of the year.

Just after announcing verbal approval from the federal government for a New York-Philadelphia-Baltimore-DC Hyperloop, more projects are now being suggested.

And even if the ultra-high speed rail does receive all the required approvals, it's not clear who would build the hyperloop rail system.

When built the hyperloop will slash travel time between NY and Washington DC to just 29 minutes. That trip now takes a little under three hours on Amtrak's high-speed Acela Express.

So far, The Boring Company has spawned many puns, but not much progress in terms of reaching Musk's goal in L.A. The company has just one tunnel-digging machine, which Musk said was purchased "second hand", and so far it's only dug a small distance beneath SpaceX-owned property in Hawthorne, California.

In 2013, Musk said a hyperloop covering the roughly 400 miles (640 km) between Los Angeles and San Francisco would cost less than $6 billion and take seven to 10 years to build. He urged supporters to contact their representatives to speed that process. Still a lot of work before formal, written approval, but this opens door for state & city discussions. But the New York City mayor's office and spokespeople from the D.C. and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation all told ABC News they were not aware of any ongoing projects involving Musk.

"There are numerous hurdles for this unproven hyperloop technology before it can become reality", Dunn said.

"Elon Musk has had no contact with Philadelphia officials and we do not know what he means when he says he has received government approval".

At the very least, the tweets showed Musk is still engaging with the White House. Musk, also the CEO of rocket manufacturer SpaceX and electric auto giant Tesla and a co-founder of PayPal, served on the administration's advisory council until Trump pulled out of the Paris climate accords. But Musk quit both councils last month after Trump announced he would withdraw the US from the Paris climate accords.
